Coat of Arms[]

The Royal coat of arms in the series is identical to that of the real-world Queen Elizabeth II. It differs from the arms of Queen Victoria only by the use of a plain Gaelic harp rather than the harp of the Kingdom of Ireland. The arms shown on the Royal Train are in the English arrangement; with the three lions of England in two quarters, the red lion of Scotland in one quarter, and the harp of Ireland in the final quarter. In Scotland, the place of the English and Scottish arms are reversed; but this has never been shown in Princess Principal.

Historically (and in real life), this coat of arms first appeared in 1340, when King Edward III quartered the arms of England with the fleur-de-lys of France; signifying his claim to the throne of France via his mother. The red lion of Scotland was adopted in the 13th century, while the Gaelic harp became the symbol of the Kingdom of Ireland in 1542, when King Henry VIII proclaimed the Kingdom of Ireland (with himself as its King). All were quartered together in 1603, when King James VI of Scotland inherited the thrones of England and Ireland from Queen Elizabeth I. The fleur-de-lys was only dropped in 1800 when King George III abandoned the claim to France.
