Etymology[]

Princess bears similarities to British Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. Both are blonde English princesses with the same first name who are (were) fourth in line to the throne.
The backstory of Ange and Princess is furthermore inspired by the book The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain, published in 1881. [2]
Personality[]

Princess is a kind, humble and polite girl. She is talented in many different fields, such as dance, piano, and languages. She is popular with the public and a favourite of the Queen. To maintain this perfect exterior, she works and worked very hard, especially seeing how she was not born into royalty.
At times she also shows a mysterious side to herself: she joined a commonwealth spy team, the enemy of her kingdom, for her own goal to become queen and unify the nation.
Dorothy and Ange described her as quite menacing too sometimes, especially when she is angry. [3]
History[]

The Royal Family of Albion prior to the London Revolution with Ange in the bottom-left corner. (Ep. 01)
Charlotte was born in Albion somewhere in the 19th century in London, around 17 years before the start of season 1. She was born from an unnamed father and unknown mother and given the birth name Ange. Sometime before the London Revolution broke out, she was a poor and young pickpocket with barely the means to get by.
When she was seven years old, Charlotte was walking around the Royal Castle of Albion and snuck into the garden through a small entrance. However, here in the garden she encountered the princess, who looked remarkably like her. This other girl introduced herself as "Charlotte" (known throughout Princess Principal as Ange le Carré). The two girls became quick friends and spent their time together, playing games and pranks on their guardians and switching roles through their similar appearances.
One day, the two friends decided to switch places for a day so that the princess could see the outside world. However, on that day there was an uprising from the people against the royal family of Albion, later dubbed the London Revolution. Citizens took to the castle en masse, firing cannons and burning buildings.
One day, the two friends decided to switch places for a day so that the princess could see the outside world. However, on that day there was an uprising from the people against the royal family of Albion, later dubbed the London Revolution. Citizens took to the castle en masse, firing cannons and burning buildings. The princess in civilian wear hurried back to the castle where she met the peasant girl dressed as the princess again. The princess promised her that she would become queen and tear down the walls that came between them so they could be together, before the two girls were separated in the chaos of the revolution.
The revolution divided Albion into the Kingdom of Albion and the Commonwealth through the London Wall. The two girls were now trapped on opposite sides in their reversed roles without being able to reach one another, as it is highly difficult to cross the London Wall. Ange (previously named Charlotte) began her life in the Commonwealth, and Charlotte (previously named Ange) took over as a princess of the Kingdom of Albion.
Princess suffered many hardships as she was suddenly thrust into an environment she had no prior experience in. She was unable to read and did not know anything of etiquette, manners, dance, music or history. Through painstaking effort and while under immense pressure, she taught herself all these subjects and more.
Meanwhile, Ange was training to become a spy, as she saw this as the only way to reunite with Princess. Ange later ended up proposing Operation: Changeling to her supervisors: Ange was to "switch places" (unbeknownst to Control, Ange would simply be taking back her original spot as the nation's princess) with Princess Charlotte. This would be done so the Commonwealth would have a spy in the royal family. Control approved of Ange's proposed plan and sent her across the London Wall to start the mission.

To get close to Princess Charlotte for Operation: Changeling, Control enlisted Ange and Dorothy at Queen's Mayfaire Academy, the school that Princess Charlotte attends. The two spies investigated the princess and were planning on approaching her during a ball. However, at this ball, they were handed new urgent orders by Control which took priority. Ange ended up approaching Princess and secretly handed her a note explaining her situation. However, Princess ended up using this information to her advantage and threatened to expose Ange and Dorothy if Control did not comply with her demands: Princess wanted Control to help her become queen. In the end, Control was left with no choice but to comply, and Princess ended up aligning herself with the Commonwealth spies.
In the morning (Episode 3: Case 2 Vice Voice), Ange and Princess met up on the roof of Queen's Mayfaire Academy. It was here where Ange revealed that she never intended to go through with Operation: Changeling; she became a spy so she could get sent across the wall and reunite with Princess. Ange told Princess that she had a route planned out for them to run away to Casablanca together. However, Princess Charlotte refused Ange's offer. She said that she wanted to make Ange's original promise come true: Princess wants to become queen and tear down the walls that separate them. This is why she initiated the alignment with the Commonwealth. Ange was visibly shaken by this turn of events, but ended up promising to help Princess reach her goals, even if it meant deceiving everyone and herself.

In Crown Handler Chapter 1, Princess and the other members of Team White Pigeon were tasked with investigating Winston, the grand chamberlain. He was a spy in the Royal Family of Albion who had been working for the Commonwealth and went by the alias "Bishop." The girls discovered that he was in fact a double agent for a third unknown party. Ange confronted Winston, offering to help him flee if he kept her secret about being the true princess. Winston accepted her offer. On his escape, he was able to meet with Princess one last time, and said it was an honour to have served her. Later on his escape, he was shot by an unknown sniper and died.
After Winston's disappearance, Control was satisfied since a mole has been eliminated, and assigned a different team to the further investigation. Team White Pigeon concluded the film by lamenting how they had wished for a different outcome.
Chapter 2[]

In Crown Handler Chapter 2, Princess and the other members of Team White Pigeon were assigned a mission to retrieve Cavorite bombs that were stolen from the Commonwealth by an unknown party. With help from Control, Ange, Chise and Dorothy were able to locate all but one of the bombs in the Vicker Steam Theatre and retrieve them. The last bomb turned out to have been planted on a large Cruise ship, The Londinium, which Princess Charlotte, Beatrice and princess Mary had boarded for a ceremony. The bomb had been planted there with the intent of killing princess Mary and framing the Commonwealth. Ange and Chise ended up being able to diffuse the bomb, thereby saving all passengers with the help of Princess Charlotte and Beatrice.
At the end of the movie, Princess and Mary drove back to the New Windsor Palace. When they arrived there, Olivia informed them that the Crown Prince, Edward, had just been found dead: he was killed. Shocked, Princess Charlotte hurried inside. At the door of the Queen's bedroom she found Richard, third in line, laughing. He revealed to her that he had been the one behind the recent assassinations. It was his subordinate who silenced Winston (implying the party Winston had been threatened into working for was Richard.) Richard had planted the Cavorite bombs on The Londinium in the hopes of also killing Mary and becoming first-in-line himself. He then offered Princess Charlotte a deal, because he wanted her to work with him. Charlotte was very shaken at this turn of events, not sure what to respond with.

At the start of Crown Handler Chapter 3, Princess Charlotte told the other members of Team White Pigeon that Richard's subordinate assassinated Crown prince Edward. Now princess Mary is first-in-line for the throne. Team White Pigeon was unsure of how to proceed after learning this information, so Ange and Dorothy went undercover as Mary's new maids in the New Windsor Palace to investigate the situation. Mary's workload had increased a lot since she had become first-in-line, and the stress was getting to her. Meanwhile, Richard kept putting more pressure on Princess Charlotte and Mary because he wanted Charlotte to make a decision.
The situation around Mary's safety eventually became so dire that Charlotte ended up asking Ange if they could help Mary defect to the Commonwealth. Control ended up agreeing to this plan, and Ange, Beatrice, Chise, Dorothy and Charlotte attempted to bring Mary and her caretaker Olivia across the London Wall. During the operation, Ange apologised to Princess because she felt responsible for the situation at hand. She promised to protect Princess, even if it were to cost her her own life.
However, the operation to help Mary defect ended up failing, and the members of Team White Pigeon were jailed by the Duke of Normandy and his assistant Gazelle. It was revealed that Richard too was put in prison after being suspected for killing Edward. The Duke of Normandy then blackmailed Charlotte into becoming a double agent for him and she was left with no choice but to comply. The movie ended with Ange's piercing gaze as she sits in a prison cell.

Ange is Princess' close childhood friend. They met before the London Revolution and accidentally switched places with each other during it. Before the revolution, they spent a large amount of time together playing. Ange had taught Princess how to read and write and play the piano. Despite the reversed circumstances they found themselves in, their reunion was heartfelt and the two continue to be close friends. Both of them are working towards the goal of unifying the country so that they can return to each other's side, and strengthen the bond between them.

Princess and Ange, reunited at last (Ep. 02)
It has been shown that after their reunion, Ange seems incapable of lying to Princess and is unable to refuse her demands. Other members of Team White Pigeon have also noticed how Ange seems to have a soft spot for the princess, yet are unable to pinpoint exactly why, since they are not aware of their shared history.
When questioned in an interview about whether the girls had any romantic feelings for each other, director Masaki Tachibana replied, "I say we leave that up to [the viewer's] imagination. For Ange, she definitely feels friendship and strong feelings of trust. But we didn't interpret it as romantic when we were writing [the series]. However, to split everything into black and white... that's simply no fun. So, I leave that up to [the viewer's] imaginations." [2] Some staff members, such as animation director Eri Kojima, do ship Ange and Charlotte, as can be seen from their personal fan art.
Ange and Princess do not share the same birthday. [4] In episode 3, Beatrice raised the question whether Ange and Princess Charlotte are sisters, which Ange dismissed.
