Dorothy is one of the main characters in Princess Principal. She works under Control as the leader of Team White Pigeon and attends Queen's Mayfaire Academy as part of her cover.

Etymology[]

The name "Dorothy" comes from the Greek word Δωροθέα (Dōrothéa) meaning "God's Gift." [2] The name "Daisy," which was given to Dorothy at birth, is taken from the flower of the same name.

Development[]

Dorothy's addition to the team, according to head writer Ichirō Ōkouchi, was due to the writers wanting to set a benchmark for the spies in the world: not all spies are "rebels like Ange le Carré." [3]

Concept art from the Spy and Seek artbook shows Dorothy with bangs.

Dorothy is a cheerful and playful woman with a positive personality. She enjoys alcohol a great deal, even willing to assign her team and teammates different names associated with alcoholic beverages. Throughout the series she is also seen honey trapping guards so her comrades can continue the mission.

History[]

Pre-Season 1[]

Dorothy was born in Albion somewhere in the 19th century in London, around 20 years before the start of season 1. Her birth name is Daisy Macbean. She was born from her father Danny MacBean and her mother Dorothy Macbean. The three of them happily lived together, until one day Danny, who was an adept steam engineer, lost his right hand in an accident at work. He became a bitter alcoholic and started a cycle of chronically abusing his wife and daughter. At a certain point, no longer being able to withstand the abuse, his wife ran away and left Daisy behind with him. Daisy eventually also got fed up with the abuse and decided to run away from home. On this same day, the London Revolution broke out and she got trapped on the Commonwealth side of the wall, whereas her father was on the side of the Kingdom.

She would later end up in an orphanage, where she met Ange. Around this time Dorothy had disregarded her birth name "Daisy" and took on her mother's name "Dorothy." Ange and Dorothy would later both attend the same class at The Farm where they received spy training. Dorothy would also meet and befriend Prefect at the farm.

After having completed her training, Dorothy became a spy for the Commonwealth under spy organisation Control. She was sent across the wall, back to the Kingdom, for the purposes of Operation: Changeling.

Dorothy was reunited with her father in Episode 7: Case 18 Rouge Morgue, because of a mission assigned to her by Control. Tragically, her father was killed shortly afterwards by Gazelle, one of Duke of Normandy's spies. It is unknown whether Dorothy is aware of this.

Ange is Dorothy's teammate and friend. Dorothy has a good relationship with Ange, going as far as to having minor silly banters and understanding some of Ange's hidden intentions (though not to the degree that Princess does). For example, Ange sometimes teases Dorothy about her cover as a seventeen year old, while she is in fact twenty. Dorothy has called Ange "partner" on numerous occasions.

In Dorothy's character song, it is expressed that she considers Ange to be her closest friend, and that this is why she was immediately on board in Ange's mission to save Princess.

Dorothy has mentioned not being able to "shake Ange off since the orphanage," implying that they had met before attending The Farm. They reunited as operatives for the Operation: Changeling in Queen's Mayfaire Academy.
