Chise Todo is one of the main characters in Princess Principal. She is a member of Team White Pigeon. She works under Lord Horikawa and attends Queen's Mayfaire Academy.

Ethymology[]

The name Chise means 'torrent of wisdom' in Japanese. [Citation needed]

Director Masaki Tachibana has said that Chise was added to the series because the anime staff wanted a Japanese character who could be sympathised with, but at the same time, "could cause some kind of trouble in Western Society." [2]

Chise has a strong personality, though she also acts like an ordinary girl. It has been shown that she has a weak spot for children. She also writes letters home to her sister, and gets irritated when she is left out of the critical parts of missions.

Appearance[]

Chise's school appearance makes up of a black sash with the regular school uniform underneath. She wears black boots as well as red flowers in her hair.

Chise's spy outfit consists of a black conical hat with a black mask. She also wears the same ribbon and flower. She wears a black tight-shirt and puffy grey pants. She wears a multicoloured frill wrap with a bow, as well as a small patch of black armour with red dots. She wears a black ribbon around her arm with black leg armour, as well as black and red sandals.

Chise is originally from Japan and was trained by her father, Todo Jubei, but turned her back on him after he betrayed Lord Horikawa. They met later on in the train in Episode 5, and so she killed him. After the event, she attends the same school as Ange and her friends as an exchange student. She was in the same class as Beatrice. During spy missions, she is the most reliable fighter of the team with her swordsmanship and martial arts skills.

  • Conch Playing - Chise is shown playing a conch in Episode 8: Case 11 Pell-mell Duel. She mentioned it is the only instrument she could play.
  • Cooking - She is able to prepare some Japanese dishes, for example nukazuke.
  • Drawing and Painting - She is shown to be skilled at drawing and painting in the Cost for Custom Cars OVA and Episode 8 respectively.
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat - She is skilled in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Japanese - She can speak, read and write fluent Japanese.
  • Laundry - She went undercover as a laundry worker in Episode 6: Case 16 Loudly Laundry.
  • Physical Education - She excels at physical education, for example cricket, as shown in Episode 8.
  • Sling - She is able to use a sling with extremely high precision.
  • Swordsmanship - She is proficient with her sword.
  • Ziplining - She is seen ziplining in Episode 6.

Todo Jubei[]

Jubei was Chise's father. He seemingly raised her and taught her how to wield a sword. However, when he became a traitor, Chise took it as him "killing her father", and vowed to slay him. She insisted on fighting Todo Jubei as well because she claimed that she was familiar with his fighting technique. She succeeded in killing him in episode five. Even though she did this without hesitation during her father's attempt to assassinate Lord Horikawa, she expressed grief in front of his tombstone.

Beatrice is Chise's friend and teammate. The two girls are shown to despise each others food choices as shown in Episode 8: Case 11 Pell-mell Duel.

Dorothy[]

Dorothy is Chise's friend and teammate. She likes Dorothy's positivity and shares Ange's opinion that her undercover age is a bit on the nose.

Ange le Carré[]

Ange is Chise's friend and teammate. Both of the two girls are the ones who take on most of the action whilst the rest infiltrate. In Episode 5: Case 7 Bullet & Blade's Ballad, the first one to find her was Ange. Ange also got to know from Chise that Jubei was Chise's father. But in Episode 4: Case 9 Roaming Pigeons and Episode 8: Case 11 Pell-mell Duel it is shown that Chise dislikes how little Ange lets her do.

Princess Charlotte[]

Chise respects the Princess for treating the rest of the teams as equals. But Chise doesn't seem to be a fan of her jokes.

Lord Horikawa[]

Chise thinks highly of Lord Horikawa and also acts as a spy for him on Team White Pigeon and Operation: Changeling. They regularly meet every week.

Trivia[]

  • The samurai clan that Chise hails from may be named the Nabeshima clan, named after the Nabeshima Clan. This is based on a fragment of text that can be seen on her Committee for Commonwealth Defense personal file in the Crown Handler intro.
