Beatrice |
Beatrice is one of the main characters in Princess Principal. She is Princess' close friend and Lady-in-Waiting. She attends Queen's Mayfaire Academy and is a part of Team White Pigeon.
Ethymology[]
The name "Beatrice" comes from the Latin word "Beatrix," which means "she who makes happy." [2]

Beautrice's character was pitched by screenplay writer Ichirō Ōkouchi. He suggested her as a more inexperienced spy who could be more relatable to viewers. To balance out Beatrice's inexperience, the writers gave her the metal component in her neck which she can use to change her voice. [3]

Beatrice is a kind girl. Though often anxious, she also shows moments of bravery such as in episode 3 when she saved Ange. She contributes to Team White Pigeon through her expertise with machines and the ability to change her voice to resemble anyone else's.
Due to Beatrice's difficult childhood, she has trust issues and a hard time accepting new people as friends. For a long time Princess Charlotte was her only friend. Furthermore, because Beatrice has nothing to hide, she is the only one in Team White Pigeon who does not lie to the other members of the group.
History[]
Pre-Season 1[]
Ca. 16 years before the events of season 1, Beatrice was born into a low-ranking noble family from her unnamed father and unnamed mother. During her childhood, she unwillingly became a subject for her father's experiments. One such experiment was a surgical operation on her throat, where a mechanical device was placed which allows her to alter her voice. This subsequently lead to a great deal of bullying from her peers, being called "the mechanical girl" and saying she smelt of oil.
Beatrice would eventually enroll into Queen's Mayfaire Academy where she met Princess Charlotte who became her very first friend. [4] Beatrice later became Princess' lady-in-waiting and confidant, attending events with her and taking care of other matters.

In Episode 2: Case 1 Dancy Conspiracy, Beatrice first met Ange and Dorothy at a ball. She was highly mistrustful of them and could not understand why Princess Charlotte would want to align herself with such Commonwealth spies. Especially in Episode 3: Case 2 Vice Voice, she initially made no secret of this opinion. Later while alone in her room, she quietly said to herself, "I don't think those people are just any spies. They mean to replace you." (Thus correctly guessing the true intention of Operation: Changeling). Despite her skepticism of Ange and Dorothy, Beatrice was determined to come along with any missions in order to ensure Princess Charlotte's safety. But as a result, she accidentally ended up on board of the HMS Gloucester together with Ange. Beatrice showed many moments of bravery in this high-risk mission despite her distressed state. In particular, she managed to save Ange and escaped with her together from the ship. It was after this mission that Beatrice had warmed up to Ange, because Ange had made it clear she was prepared to sacrifice herself in order to protect Princess Charlotte.
Later in Episode 5: Case 7 Bullet & Blade's Ballad, Beatrice helped out when the Japanese Embassy visited Albion. During this case she met Chise, although they did not get much of a chance to talk in the heat of the mission. They became roommates sometime after. In chronologically the next case, Episode 4: Case 9 Roaming Pigeons, Beatrice helped out with a mission to retrieve a C-Ball Kingdom prototype, using her voice changer to her advantage throughout.

In chronologically the next case, Episode 4: Case 9 Roaming Pigeons, Beatrice helped out with a mission to retrieve a C-Ball Kingdom prototype, using her voice changer to her advantage throughout. In Episode 8: Case 11 Pell-mell Duel, she spent much of her day with Chise and getting her out of trouble. At the end of the day, together with Ange and Dorothy she tapped into the direct phone line that Lily Gaveston had set up with the Duke of Normandy. In Episode 1: Case 13 Wired Liar, she helped Ange visit Amy Anderson and later helped infiltrate the Public Security Hideout run by Public Security Minister Kimble, again using her voice-changing mechanism. She helped out with a mission once more in Episode 6: Case 16 Loudly Laundry, when she and the other members of Team White Pigeon went undercover at the Little Lambs Laundry mill in order to catch a terrorist nicknamed Poison Gas Jack. They were able to apprehend him, and also thoroughly cleaned the laundry mill for all the girls working there. Beatrice particularly helped with the maintenance of the laundry machines, since she is good with mechanics.
In Episode 7: Case 18 Rouge Morgue, Beatrice accompanied Dorothy during an undercover mission at the London Morgue. Here, she also met Dorothy's father, and Dorothy confided in her about her troubled past and family. She shared this particularly because she felt Beatrice would understand, due to her own family issues. Beatrice felt a lot closer to Dorothy afterwards. At the time, she said, "Well if that's how you're going to talk, Miss Dorothy, then this isn't just a cover anymore, we're real friends now!" After completing the mission, they went to a pub together.
In Episode 9: Case 20 Ripper Dipper, she helps out with a stake-out mission. Later in Episode 10: Case 22 Comfort Comrade, she accompanies Ange and Dorothy on a mission where they meet Eleanor (Prefect).

In Crown Handler Chapter 2, Beatrice and the other members of Team White Pigeon were assigned a mission to retrieve Cavorite bombs that were stolen from the Commonwealth by an unknown party. With help from Control, Ange, Dorothy and Chise were able to locate all but one of the bombs in the Vicker Steam Theatre and retrieve them. The last bomb turned out to have been planted on a large Cruise ship, The Londinium, which Beatrice, Princess Charlotte and princess Mary had boarded for a ceremony. The bomb had been planted there with the intent of killing princess Mary and framing the Commonwealth. Ange and Chise ended up being able to diffuse the bomb, thereby saving all passengers with the help of Princess Charlotte and Beatrice.

At the start of Crown Handler Chapter 3, Princess Charlotte told the other members of Team White Pigeon that Richard assassinated Crown prince Edward (at the end of the previous movie). Now princess Mary is first-in-line for the throne. Richard, the girls learnt, was the third party that Winston was working for. He planted the Cavorite bombs on The Londinium in the hopes of also killing Mary and becoming first-in-line himself. He offered Princess Charlotte a deal, because he wants her to work with him. Team White Pigeon was unsure of how to proceed after learning this, so they started an investigation.
The situation around Mary's safety eventually became so dire that Charlotte ended up asking Ange if they could help Mary defect to the Commonwealth. Control ended up agreeing to this plan, so Ange, Beatrice, Chise, Dorothy and Charlotte attempted to bring Mary and her caretaker Olivia across the London Wall.
However, the operation to help Mary defect ended up failing, and the members of Team White Pigeon were jailed by the Duke of Normandy and his assistant Gazelle. It was revealed that Richard too was put in prison after being suspected for killing Edward. The Duke of Normandy then blackmailed Charlotte into becoming a double agent for him and she was left with no choice but to comply.
