Albion is a country in the world of Princess Principal. It occupies the island of Great Britain. One part is ruled by the Kingdom of Albion, the other by the Commonwealth of Albion.

History[]

At the turn of the 20th century, sometime in the ages of Industrial Revolutions, the Kingdom of Albion's new royal air force, commonly known as the Air Fleet, created a dramatic shift in the balance of global power. With its monopoly on a substance called Cavorite and the Air Fleet at its command, the Kingdom of Albion became the greatest world power since the Roman Empire.

However, discontent among the lower classes boiled over, leading to revolts against the nobility and eventually a revolution led by the republicans of the Albion Parliament called the "Ironside Party". As a result the kingdom split into East and West, with the London Wall separating the Kingdom of Albion from the Commonwealth of Albion. This revolution would later be known as the London Revolution. Ten years later, London has became the front line of a secret war between the nations' spies continuing their conflict in secret, fighting a shadow war with the goal of defeating the other and uniting the empire under one rule.

Real-World Parallels[]

  • The name Albion is Celtic in origin, and has been used interchangeably with Britain as a name for the island of Great Britain. The English Kings Aethelstan and Edgar the Peaceful both used the term when referring to their domains. The latter's second or third wife was Aelfthryth, also known as Elfrida; whose name corresponds to the Queen Elfrida Infirmary.
  • Normandy and Aquitaine were both English possessions during the Medieval period. However in the real world, England lost the Hundred Years War against the Kingdom of France, and England was kicked out of the province of Gascony.
  • The Commonwealth bears resemblance to The Protectorate, also known as the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. From 16 December 1653 to 25 May 1659, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and associated territories were joined together in the Commonwealth of England, governed by a Lord Protector. This is evidenced by the Ironsides Party (hinting at Oliver Cromwell) and by the emblem on Colonel's hat; which is similar in appearance to the aforementioned Commonwealth emblem.
